So firstly i apologise for being rubbish at updating this. I'll try and update as much as i can today before we take the next step of our journey
January 2009
We got our test results back - My tubes were clear and all my blood tests showed that my eggs were in good shape and all worked regular as clockwork. Our Male test showed that there was a problem :( the poor swimmers were lazy and didn't perform well. Not a proven fact but we think 20 years of sitting on a thin road bike saddle has contributed!
The decision was made to try IUI (insemination) so we started this in February
February 2009
So this is our first cycle of injecting hormones to create more follicles (eggs) so there are more targets for the swim team. The injection used is called Follistim and came in a pen very much like a diabetic uses. Every night from CD4 until CD11 i had to inject 125iu into my stomach!
On CD 11 i had an ultrasound to see how the follicles had developed - we had 4 nice size ones - yey. The nurse have me the HCG injection to induce ovulation (large 2 inch needle - gulp) and we were set for IUI the next 2 days which just so happened to be Valentines day.
On the morning we had to take the swimmers in so they could be washed and clear out the poor ones. We went for breakfast whilst they do this. We get back and then go straight in where a catheter is inserted with the swimmers in and bam its done. Very simple and painless. The same thing the next day
Following this was 2 hard weeks of not knowing if it worked or not. I had to use progesterone night and morning to help support the lining of the uterus for implantation. This drug is horrible. It mimics pregnancy and really messes with your mind.
Sadly this first attempt didn't work :(
March 2009
After having a negative blood test my specialist did another ultrasound to check for cysts. Unfortunately i had a rather large one on my right ovary so i had to sit out this cycle as the injections/drugs could cause the cyst to burst and cause some serious damage. Instead i had to take a month of Birth control - this was torture mentally, plus after all the stimulating drugs to then suck them out of your body makes you whacky!
April 2009
Another period arrives which dawns the start of our 2nd round of IUI. Starting with the ultrasound to check the cyst (yey its gone) i started up the injections again to make lots of targets. We got 3 this time, again all of a good size.
Back to back IUIs again but this time the need for the ovulation drug/injection fell on a Sunday so that meant R had to do it for me...... hmmm nervous male and a 2 inch needle! He did a great job - maybe pushed it in a little far but hey he got the job done :)
Same regime as last time - drop off the swim team, then i went in for the procedure. We had managed to improve the numbers of spermies this time with supplementation so we were more hopeful.
I felt a bit better in the following 2 weeks this time because i knew what to expect - Sadly again it did not work.
Our Specialist had already mentioned that she thought now we should only have 2 attempts at this so now we move to I.V.F
